ABOUT MAARIT NISSILA

Maarit Nissila is a Finnish-American writer-director based in New York. She is a Fulbright Scholar and a recipient of the prestigious Richard P. Rogers Spirit of Excellence in Directing Award.

Maarit wrote the screenplay for the narrative feature biopic Kikka! about the provocative, 80's pop star. The film received two Jussi Awards (the "Finnish Oscars") and five nominations in 2023. Her recent directing credits include the docu-show Who Do You Think You Are? for Warner Bros Finland. In 2023 Maarit received a 1-year Artist Grant from the Finnish Culture Fund for her screenplay about a female poet set in 1500's London.

Maarit's previous experience also extends into editing, where her credits include feature documentaries such as Big vs. Small, and Farmers For America for PBS, as well as the documentary series This is Life With Lisa Ling for CNN and Breaking Hate for NBC.

AWARDS AND RECOGNITIONS

Documentary Big vs. Small (Edited by) won the "Best Feature Film Award" at Surf At Lisboa Film Fest and "World Cinema Audience Award" at the Maui Film Festival in 2020, "Special Jury Award" at the New York WILD Film Festival 2022.

Feature screenplay Lilly Loves Phoenix (Written by) was chosen as a semifinalist in the 2015 Blue Cat Screenwriting Competition.

Winner of Best Short Screenplay at the LA All Sports Film Festival in 2014 with screenplay Rapture, written by Maarit Nissila and Greg Kappy

The Life And Death Experiences of Young Beth Byrd,  22min (Directed by):

· Richard P. Rogers Spirit of Excellence in Directing Award  ($15 000, American Film Institute)

· An Honorable Mention at the Nordic Glory Film Festival 

· Remy Award at the Houston World Fest

Feature documentary Shooting For Home (Edited by) won the Audience Choice Award at the 2012 All Sports LA Film Festival.
